OPTENET’S new generation URL filtering service in NETASQ firewalls

For version 6.2 of its firmware, NETASQ has created a new generation of content filtering, joining forces with the experts in the field and thereby providing its clients with a solution that keeps up with their demands.

OPTENET WEB FILTERING

Currently, more than 35% of internet surfing time in companies is spent on non-work-related subjects. This circumstance affects several aspects of a company’s operations, such as the rising cost of technical investments, decreased employee productivity, and even legal risks. Indeed, excessive use of the internet for non-professional reasons may congest the internet access and disrupt employees’ work, not to mention the legal risks the company faces for viewing illegal contents.

Installing a web filter solution with restrictiveness catered to the policy you wish to apply means that you will be able to control the use of the internet. Besides letting you better manage your internet access, this solution can also protect your network from certain attacks (in particular, phishing) and internet viruses by prohibiting users’ access to potentially-dangerous sites.

NEW ANTISPAM ENGINE

Several studies have shown that spam accounts for more than 60% of global mail traffic. Faced with such a deluge of parasite e-mails, all technologies have to chip in to shield users from this nuisance, which is why NETASQ has opted to combine the two main antispam approaches in a single architecture in order to reap the benefits of each solution while obtaining maximum effectiveness.

The new Antispam engine now consists of a DNS blacklist analysis (RBL), which was already on previous versions, and a heuristic analysis engine which has just been added recently. The heuristic analysis engine is the fruit of many years of development, and performs many different analyses (both on message headers and contents), such as empirical rule analyses, semantic analyses, counter-reactions, and even the detection of embedded HTML code. Analyses of the embedded HTML code enables in particular the detection of any new category of spam that does not contain text, but just one or a few images.

One of the strong points of the architecture that NETASQ has chosen is its use of two technologies in parallel in such a way as to ensure the best level of protection without inconveniencing the user in any way. Also, this new antispam engine can be obtained on products with valid maintenance packs, from F200 appliances and upwards.

NEW DYNAMIC ROUTING FEATURE

NETASQ has now built in a new module to handle the different dynamic routing protocols (RIP v1/2, OSPF v2 and BGPv4). Dynamic routing enables the dynamic, and therefore automatic, modification of traffic routing in the event a network device that normally transmits the traffic is no longer available.

A feature that is usually present on dedicated platforms, dynamic routing is now built-in on NETASQ appliances so that they become unified security solutions (firewall, IPS, VPN, QoS, content filtering, dynamic routing…).
